SHOESMITH'S BOOKDRIVE FOR THE HOMELESS

While Lily was developing her plan for the fundraiser and book drive for Shoesmith, the students were participating in a service project, Stamp Out Homelessness. The children held a food drive for the neighborhood food pantry and raised money via penny wars. The money they raised was used to put together survival packs that were delivered by adults to the homeless people living on Lower Wacker Drive. The children are now learning that homeless adults do not have access to books and journals. Since it is important to keep people reading and writing, the students are holding a book drive to gather books and journals for homeless adults.

BOOK DRIVE FOR SHOESMITH STUDENTS

We will also be collecting new and gently-used books for the students at Shoesmith. Books of all reading levels for elementary schoolers are greatly appreciated. Books of all levels, from phonics-learning to chapter books will be treasured by the scholars at Shoesmith. We would especially appreciate donations of books with African-American central figures and books about great African-American historical figures.

FUNDRAISER

The main goal of this project is to gather books for the schoolchildren at Shoesmith, especially those with African-American central figures and great African-American historical figures. Donating to our fundraiser will allow us to purchase these books for the students. We would like to be able to provide the students with many new books with characters to whom they can relate. 100% of donations will be used to buy books for the children.

Here are examples of the books we plan on purchasing for the kindergarteners and first graders:

  • Wangari’s Trees of Peace: A True Story from Africa by Jeanette Winter

  • Salt in His Shoes by Deloris Jordan with Roslyn M. Jordan, illustrated by Kadir Nelson

  • What a Wonderful World by George David Weiss and Bob Thiele, illustrated by Ashley Bryan

  • Skit-Scat Raggedy Cat by Roxane Orgill, illustrated by Sean Qualls

  • Amazing Grace by Mary Hoffman, illustrated by Caroline Binch
